About
Outdoorism is about finding paths to an outdoor life in a culture that discourages this pursuit. As we discover the paths that work, we’ll map them as Lifemaps.
We prefer quality content over quantity. Articles highlight at least one of the following:
- Inspiration. Stories, pictures, videos, maps – anything to remind us why we love the outdoors, and motivate us to keep searching for a life that incorporates it.
- Investigation. There are many research articles on outdoor issues out there, but not many by individuals seeking to see and understand the issues for ourselves. Thoughtful and provocative articles on outdoor issues are welcome, as are individual efforts to find evidence relevant to outdoor issues.
- Realization. Every step we take outdoors is a step away from the indoor path sanctioned by our culture. How can we make a living if we choose the path without a roof?

I’m Dylan Kuhn, founder of Outdoorism. I’ve struggled throughout my career as a web developer with strong desires to spend extended periods of time outdoors. I’ve made multi-month attempts to through-hike the Pacific Crest Trail and the Continental Divide Trail, and bike toured around the perimeter of the United States. Every time I run out of money and get a job, I find I can only spend a few years as a Weekend Warrior before I have to get out again.
Starting in July 2008, I will quit my job and go outside once more. This time, instead of disappearing with my wife onto a long trail, she has offered to work while I see if I can answer some questions about Outdoorism.
Why do we value the outdoors, and how do we realize this value in our lives?
What are the biggest threats to an outdoor lifestyle, and can I see evidence for them myself?
Can I answer these questions for others as well as myself?
Outdoorism.com is my first step towards the answers. I hope it’s a step for you too.
